Putting the Scrap in Scrapmageddon [Scrapmageddon Devlog #3]

DISCLAIMER: All Scrapmageddon images are W.I.P. and heavily subject to change, NOT representative of the final product.

For a game called Scrapmageddon, there's been a distinct lack of scrap to be found. So this past week I've been working on prototypes to fix that, and so far I think the results are good.

How does scrapping work?

Scrap will be obtained by using specific tools on cars found in the world, the resource you're trying to get will determine which tool you use. Need metal to make some ammo? Pull out your wrench and start breaking some bumpers. Need glass for a D.I.Y. frag grenade? You could use your wrench to bust some windows out, but you might be better off taking your screwdriver to get even more glass.

Every time you hit a scrappable part, it will create a weakpoint that you can hit to deal double damage to that part.
Right now the prototype feels very satisfying so I'm excited to pretty it up by modeling the parts, adding particle effects, sound effects, etc.

How does crafting work?

If you want to put all this junk to use, you'll want to take all the scrap back to your base. You can leave it in your inventory or deposit it into your resource stash to make room to grab more while the sun is still shining (trust me, you don't want to be out when it's not). Go to your workbench and from there you can open the crafting menu and create your preferred tools of destruction, assuming you have the resources for it.

This UI is obviously going to need some work, but for now it is functional with a couple of recipes in there for crafting ammo and a placeholder resource item. I'm still somewhat debating how "involved" crafting is going to be, because I want it to feel intentional, but I also don't want to make it a huge chore to craft a few bullets. I considered making a short animation after you've crafted everything you need and you exit the workbench, but I'll have to see how it affects the game feel because you're going to be crafting pretty often.

What will I be able to craft?

Crafting will include not only weapons, ammo, and other resources for deeper crafting recipes, but you'll also be able to make scrap turrets, traps, upgrades to your walls, lights so you can see better at night, equipment to boost your inventory, grenades, and other consumable items so that you can plan not only for offense, but also defense. In addition, there will be a cooking system where you can collect certain food resources and once every x amount of time you'll be able to eat a meal you've prepared to gain temporary status effects such as increased health and regen, or a stamina boost. Eating food and drinking water will not be required in Scrapmageddon, but the bonuses they offer will make you want to do it anyways. A hearty steak might give you enough health to shake off a few blows if you're expecting to take some damage, but if you're going to be traveling you might want some wolfberry soup to give you that extra running time.

I just realized last week I said I'd be showing off the roadmap this week, but with the prototypes I have in place now, I'm going to make a few revisions and I'll have it ready for next week. This week I have to go through the painful process of updating Unity from 2021 to 2023 so a lot of things are going to break and there won't be a lot to show so it'll be good timing. Hopefully the upgrade doesn't crash so hard it turns the game from a survival FPS to an 18+ visual novel about reproducing with aliens, but don't be surprised if next week's post looks a little strange.

Thanks for reading, see you all in the next one
