A Peek at the ARSEnal [Scrapmageddon Devlog #2]

DISCLAIMER: All Scrapmageddon images are W.I.P. and heavily subject to change, NOT representative of the final product.

(sorry for the title)

With the last devlog being a little preachy, I've decided to show off some design goals and slightly less fails. This week was filled with a lot of backend work and optimizing already-existing systems for modularity and ease of use so there's not a whole lot to show, but I'll do my best.

One topic I've put a lot of thought into the past week is the question of

What guns will be in Scrapmageddon?

The guns in Scrapmageddon will come in 2 different tiers:

Scrap

Most of your arsenal will consist of scrap weapons. Scrap weapons are your most reliable line of defense, assuming you remember to craft the ammo for them... you did craft the ammo, right? Specially designed to detach aliens from their most precious limbs and vital organs, scrap weapons are crude and rude. Built from whatever trash you might find in your pocket on a particular day, and a whole lotta love for spreading alien extremities.

[REDACTED]

The second tier of weaponry, [REDACTED] weapons will be significantly more deadly than scrap weapons, and as such their ammo will be hard to come by. They can quickly turn the tide of battle owing to their unique traits, such as piercing, AoE damage, and more. You will only be able to obtain the resource needed to craft them after killing the [REDACTED] and harvesting it's [REDACTED]. They're typically much prettier and refined looking, and are sure to put a smile on your blood-riddled face.

But enough of the fancy statistics talk, let's see some pictures,

What do they look like?

While the models themselves haven't been made and I'm still working on the design for them, I did spend a couple days in the Blender workshop cooking up our first official addition to Scrapmageddon's arsenal. Presenting to you, fresh out of the oven:

The Scrap RevolverTM

(patent pending)

Who needs fancy single-action firing systems and "real ammunition" when you can use CO2 and small rebar instead? Fashioned with it's own custom paint-job, this thing is way cooler (and obtainable) than any regular revolver, and it even comes with integrated glow sights! Guaranteed to leave enemies wishing the first shot sent them to their maker. Just be careful not to put your fingers near... any of it, it's a little rusty and tetanus shots are hard to come by these days. Here's a sneak preview of the model in-game and some of it's animations.

In other news, another thing I've been working on is the

User interface design

I want Scrapmageddon's UI to be cohesive, but also more interesting to look at than a bunch of squares on the screen. Only time will tell how far I go chasing this dream before my lack of graphic design skills catch up to me and all my menus start looking more boxy than an Amazon warehouse, but for now, I think the inventory is starting to look fairly good.

While it's certainly in need of tweaking in terms of beautification and visual clarity, this is more or less what the layout will continue to look like. In terms of functionality, the player inventory is in the best state it's been in. It's pretty modular right now, as you can see I can easily add additional slots for your storing pleasure. These are simple to create and tweak, and overall everything is mostly bug-free. You can rotate items, drop them, pick them back up, and clicking on them will show more details on the info tab (weapon damage, tool uses, etc.). There's still some functionality that needs to be added in regards to stacking items like ammo, but for now I'm just going to bask in the glory of something that works before I go and break it all over again.

That's all I've got to show this week, next week I plan on showing off the roadmap, and some very subject-to-change details about when the demo can be expected. Be sure to tune in next time when I cause an integer overflow so massive I break the seams of reality and everyone on Earth falls helplessly into the matrix.

Thanks for reading, see you all in the next one
